Paramedic

Hello, everyone! My name is Sonia and I have been studying Prehospital Medical Care for 3 years to become a paramedic. I will graduate next year. I made a Prehospital Emergency Care glossary for students who have difficulties finding the right term in English, There are 20 words related to the program with a definition and the pronunciation. I chose the words from the textbook made by Nicholas Walker. Do not hesitate to look at it if you're struggling to find the right words in English. Thank you.

Paramedic
Noun
A person who is trained to assist a physician or to give first aid or other health care in the abscence of a physician, often as part of a police, rescue, or firefighting squad.
Example: Hello, I'm a paramedic.

Cardiac Monitor
Noun
A piece of electronic equipment for continual observation of the function of the heart.

Bruise
Noun
An injury appearing as an area of discolored skin on the body, caused by a blow or impact rupturing underlying blood vessels.
Example: You have a bruise on your leg.

A vehicule specially equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from the hospital.
Example: We will take the ambulance to go to the hospital.

Noun
A strip of material used to bind a wound or to protect an injured part of the body.
Example: I will put this bandage on your wound to stop the bleeding.

Noun
A tool for moving injured patient.
Example: We should attach the patient to the backboard and bring it to the ambulance.

Combitube
Noun
A blind insertion airway device used in the pre-hospital and emergency setting. It is designed to provide an airway to facilitate the mechanical ventilation of a patient in respiratory distress.
Example: We should use the combitube on the patient to open the airways which will help regulate the breathing.

Cyanotic
Adjective
When a patient's skin and mucous membranes are bluish in color from an inadequate supply of oxygen in the blood.
Example: The patient is cyanotic.

Edema
Noun
A condition characterized by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body.
Example: When there is an inflammatory reaction, one of the reactions is an edema.

Noun
Bleeding from the nose.
Example: You're having a nosebleed.

Glucagon
Noun
A hormone produced in the pancreas when glucose in the blood is low. It helps the body raise glucose levels.
Example: I will inject this glucagon on your leg to increase the glucose in your blood.

A device that provides a method to transfer breathing oxygen gas from a storage tank to the lungs. It may cover the nose and mouth or the entire face.
Example: I'm going to put an oxygen mask on your face to help you breathe easier than before.

Noun
Emergency medical procedures for restoring normal heartbeat and breathing to victims of heart failure, drowning, etc,

Blood Pressure
Noun
The pressure of the blood in the circulatory system, often meaured for diagnosis since it is closely related to the force and rate of the heartbeat and the diameter and elasticity of the arterial walls.
Example: I am going to look for your blood pressure.
